Abstract

This paper presents an approach to determine optimal tether deployment/retrieval trajectories using direct collocation and nonlinear programming. A derivation of the non-dimensional equations of motion for a two-body tethered spacecraft system is provided. Optimal solutions are obtained for several deployment/retrieval scenarios to gain insight into tethered spacecraft motion.
