On the delay in a multiple access system with large propagation delay

Abstract

Recent advances of optical technology have made it possible to transmit at very high data rates. Consequently, the propagation delay for a packet of information is long compared to the length of a packet. A model is described in which newly generated packets arrive according to a Poisson process with given rate. Time is divided into slots of unit length, where time is normalized so that one packet can be transmitted in one slot.
