Abstract

A pulsed, through-transmission ultrasound system for monitoring displacements of the tongue during speech production is outlined. The technique enables on-line recording of the position of a discrete element on the dorsal surface of the tongue. A simultaneous cinefluoroscopic ultrasonic study of tongue motions resulted in excellent agreement between ultrasound data obtained with this technique and corresponding data measured from cine films.
