Abstract

A diffuse field in a solid medium is found to partition its energy between transverse and dilatational waves in a fraction R = 2{c_d/c_t) ³. Energy flow rates from a diffuse field into a surface transducer from dilatational transverse, and surface waves are compared. The relevance of the diffuse field concept for acoustic emission is discussed.
