Abstract
The history of land use planning and population growth around O'Hare International Airport shows that current incompatibilities are a consequence of both airport and municipality planning decisions. Attempting to prevent future noise incompatibility therefore requires closer cooperation between the airport operator and the land use planners of neighboring municipalities, something that has not been present throughout O'Hare's history. This paper examines the history of land development around O'Hare in order to determine the reasons for land use compatibility around this major transportation facility.
