Abstract

Rydberg Rydberg state transitions of Ne2 have been observed for the first time by laser-excitation spectroscopy. Molecular Rydberg states having principal quantum numbers as large as 17 have been detected despite the predissociative nature of the high-lying Ne2 excited states. Several bands have been rotationally resolved and the rotational constant measured for the metastable 3s u+3 state of the excimer agrees with theoretical (ab initio) predictions to within 4%.
