Abstract
The nuclear-quadrupole interaction at Ta181 in HfS2 was measured between 4.2 and 470 K by time differential perturbed angular correlations. We present evidence for an unusual structural phase transition at 295 K. At this temperature nuclear-quadrupole frequency doubling occurs which is attributed to a modulation of the electric field gradient caused by displacive excitations.
