Abstract
The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) consisting of a short cavity between two stacks of alternating quarter-wavelength high and low refractive-index is described. Single longitudinal-mode operation and a circular emission pattern of VCSEL allows better coupling into optical fiber without the need for beam-shaping optics. The planar structure of VCSEL allows easier fabrication and testing processes, resulting in higher device yield.
