Novel materials and devices for polymer light emitting diodes

Abstract

Hybrid polymers with electron transporting oxadiazole side-chains attached to a conjugated backbone which is both hole transporting and light emitting are designed and synthesized. In this new polymers, oxadiazole moieties are incorporated by covalently linking them to a conjugated polymer backbone, i.e. poly(phenylene vinylene) or poly(phenylene thiophene). The single-layer devices (ITO/polymer/Al) fabricated from these polymers show at least an order of magnitude increase in quantum efficiency when compared to the corresponding PPV8 or PPT8 LEDs.
