Abstract
We observe nonequilibrium melting of the two dimensional electron crystal on the surface of liquid helium. Melting is indicated by a sharp change in the magnetoresistance. The temperature and electric field at which melting occurs depends upon the applied magnetic field. A model is presented involving magnetic field induced shear melting.
