Abstract

The noncontact ultrasonic determination of the elastic properties of a transverse isotropic thin film system was described. The method used was a modification of the well-known impulsive stimulated thermal scattering method (ISTS), in which two picosecond excitation laser pulses were crossed spatially and temporally in an absorbing sample. Although elastic anisotropy within film can be characterized by orienting grating wave vectors, it may not be so apparent that in-plane and through-plane properties can also be derived. Therefore, this technique was applied to determine such properties. It was ascertained that ISTS has the capacity to accurately characterize the elastic moduli in a transverse isotropic film. ISTS was believed to be the only presently available noninvasive tool which allowed for rapid elastic characterization in anisotropic thin films.
