Abstract
A stochastic approach has been used to study the surface texture of paper. A quantitative method for evaluating the printing smoothness of paper from its roughness profile is given. Four ranking criteria have been proposed on the basis of time series models and spectral moments. Experimental work was done to collect the roughness data on ten papers of different qualities. Application of the ranking criteria to 70-lb/ream (103 g/m**2) coated papers illustrates that the new method is simple, fast, and capable of grading the papers of different qualities. The method can be computerized and directly applied in the mill.
