Museum-Led Design of Student-Centered K-12 Learning: Where Informal Perspectives Meet Formal Requirements

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Many museums create educational content for K-12 students and classrooms, bringing informal learning opportunities to formal educational contexts. The design considerations prioritized by these teams and the assumptions that influence these priorities impact the final product they create. In this paper, we describe how a museum-based design team created a learning module for use in K-12 classrooms. We report our analysis of five design team meetings and five individual semi-structured interviews, spaced strategically throughout the design process. We share what design considerations the team prioritized over time and highlight how team members verbalized assumptions about student-centered learning.
