Multiscale 3-D geologic mapping in support of sustainable water supply management in McHenry County, Illinois

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

3-D geologic maps have been developed at various scales that show shallow, sand and gravel aquifer distribution and character throughout McHenry County, Illinois. These maps were made in support of urgent needs by municipal leaders and residents to address long-term water supply issues in the area. A rigorous field investigation of drilling and geophysics was coupled with data standardization and 3-D visualization to optimize the quality and efficiency of 3-D geologic interpretations. The 3-D geologic maps were used as conceptual frameworks for regional and local groundwater flow studies that address long-term water supply needs and pumping effects on shallow groundwater flow systems.
