Abstract
The focus of this study is the development of a stochastic model that can account for the variability exhibited by the force-displacement response at the macro-scale for brittle materials. In particular, an extension of the one-dimensional model proposed by Krajcinovic and Silva is considered. The validity of the model is demonstrated through comparison with experimental data based on uniaxial compressive tests on concrete specimens. The model is shown to offer a viable and simple alternative to empirically based methods for exploring some of the statistical aspects of the force-displacement behavior of brittle materials.
