Modern Instances: Intimacy and America's Crisis of Confidence

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Exposes the illusions of self-fulfillment in late-20th-century America by tracing changing cultural values involved in such issues as intimacy, marriage, identity, and success, elements found in American realist fiction that both reflects and critiques the ascendant ideology. Examples include William Dean Howells's 'A Modern Instance' (1882) and the short fiction of Frederick Barthelme.
