Abstract
An estimated 320 000 housing units in Illinois have been built over or adjacent to underground mines. This report provides information on how subsidence may be detected and its causes. It outlines mining methods and describes the types of subsidence that occur. The effects of subsidence are discussed with practical solutions suggested for damaged houses. Information is provided for homeowners considering mine subsidence insurance, and advice on what to do in the event of subsidence is given. -R.Gower
