Abstract

The solidification, microstructure and mechanical behavior of permanent mold cast Mg-4Al-4X:(Ca, Ce, La, Sr) and AXJ530 alloys have been investigated. An instrumented permanent mold was used to measure mold temperature as a function of casting cycle. The La and Ce containing alloys, with narrower freezing ranges were more prone to casting defects compared to the Ca and Sr containing alloys. Mold temperature changes on the order of 200°C resulted in negligible changes in α-Mg dendrite size or the morphology of the interdendritic microstructure. However creep behavior at 175°C was significantly influenced by mold temperature and corresponding casting cooling rates.
