A novel interferometric technique that permits high sensitivity measurements of the spectral properties of light over narrow spatial regions was developed. The technique was used to measure the cross-spectral density of the steady-state optical field. It was shown that for spatially coherent polychromatic optical fields, the measurement of the phase of the second-order correlations determines the phase of this associated, spatially coherent field.
