The e.s.r. spectra [gl I = 3.84,gl = 2.02, A I I (55Mn)= -0.0038 cm-l, A, (j5Mn)= -0.0056 cm-l] at 77 K were identical with those for Mn(nor),I and much better defined than those of the similar green species generated by oxidation.2 Again, the dispropor- tionation of Mn1I1 is confirmed. The use of these manganese(1v) alkyl complexes for syn- thesising other manganese(1v) compounds is under study. N2 - The interaction of tris(acetylacetonato)manganese(III), Mn(acac)3, with methyl-lithium in the presence of 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe) in diethyl ether leads, in a disproportionation reaction, to MnMe2(dmpe)2 and to Mn Me 4(dmpe) whose X-ray structure has been determined; also synthesised from Mn (acac)3 are MnMe4(PMe3)2 and the green tetrahedral alkyl complexes MnR4, R = CH2SiMe3 and CH2CMe3 which have been identified spectroscopically.
