Abstract

This paper provides an introduction and overview of topics that are relevant to project design and management under conditions of uncertainty, with an emphasis on civil engineering projects. Its intent is to `de-mystify' risk analysis and provide the construction practitioner with a foothold in the climb to these essential skills. Topics presented include theories of uncertainty, tools and techniques for risk analysis, state-of-the-art in risk analysis, and risk analysis applications in civil engineering.
