Abstract
This chapter reviews the standard theoretical wisdom, based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field equations, concerning Majorana fermions in so-called topological superconductors and (Fermi) superfluids, and attempts to provide some intuition concerning their nature. The experimental situation is briefly discussed. At the end some doubts about the standard wisdom are expressed.
