Abstract
The last few years have seen a substantial amount of experimental and theoretical work on thequantum mechanics of macroscopic variables in low-temperature systems, and in particularon the phenomenon of “macroscopic quantum tunnelling.” This talksummarizes the present situation in this area of research with emphasis on anumber of currently unresolved conceptual problems, and reviews its current and potential significance for the foundations of physics.
