Abstract

We studied 100 patients who underwent stent implantation in two or more coronary arteries to determine whether this procedure improves quality of life and reduces the need for repeat revascularization, particularly the need for coronary bypass surgery, in patients with multivessel coronary disease. Clinical follow-up at 21 ± 10 months showed 30 patients needed repeat revascularization; overall survival was 96%. We conclude that coronary stent implantation in this patient population, compared with angioplasty, can be performed with fewer procedural complications, lowers the need for repeat revascularization, particularly coronary bypass surgery, and provides favorable long-term survival.
