Abstract

The penetration force required to push a flat plate vertically through a dense granular medium was investigated. It was observed that the stick-slip fluctuations inherent in the drag process have complex behavior which is affected by the finite size of the vessel containing the medium. It was also observed that the penetration force near a solid boundary can be affected by the surface characteristics of the boundary. It was found that penetration force near the bottom is strongly affected by the surface properties of the bottom boundary.
