Abstract

This article looks at the fundamental practices of leadership in the management of public schools’ internal and external environments in the United States. After considering the research on links between educational leadership and pupils’ results, the authors look more precisely at the reasons underpinning principals’ actions by viewing leadership as a cognitive activity. They end by stressing the importance of transformational leadership, which focuses on social justice. This is a recent trend implying that principals aim for more equality and excellence in their professional practice.
