Abstract

A three-dimensional numerical simulation of the unsteady flow field behind a normal flat plate in a uniform stream is conducted to study the structure of a turbulent wake. A finite volume procedure is used to resolve the large scales of motion in conjunction with an eddy viscosity model for the sub-grid scales. Marked differences are seen between the three-dimensional simulation and a comparable two-dimensional simulation for a Reynolds number of 1000. The results of the three-dimensional simulation show favorable agreement with experimental data.
