Abstract

There has been increasing interest in the use of lactate as a monitoring tool in equine medicine. Knowledge of the blood lactate concentration may give prognostic information in some situations, and blood lactate concentrations in other body fluids can be of diagnostic value. The advent of the handheld monitor has made lactate measurements accessible to all practitioners, and lactate measurements can therefore be used in the field situation in addition to being useful for the hospital-based practitioner.
