Abstract
Brazil is one of the countries with the worst response in facing the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The epidemiological indicators are impacted by the denialism of the federal government. Thus, this article aims to evaluate the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, discuss the approaches used to confront the virus and present the main problems of a federal management based on denialism. The analysis of the epidemiological situation used data of the countries in Our World in Data, considering the date of April 12, 2021 as reference, and results of the Epicovid-19 epidemiological studies. Brazil, the sixth most populous country in the world, was in the top positions in absolute number of cases (3rd), deaths (2nd) and vaccination (5th). Adjusting for population size, the country ranked 15th, 35th and 40th in deaths, cases and vaccination, respectively. The Epicovid-19 studies indicate seroprevalences of less than 25% and marked socioeconomic inequalities in virus infection. The seven deadly sins are related to testing, contact tracing, masks, lockdowns, fostering ineffective drugs, vaccines and erratic leadership. The narrative and the actions of the federal government in these items are inappropriate in face of the current scientific knowledge to confront the pandemic. The Brazilian challenge remains political, to preserve the life of the population.
