Abstract
Knowledge plays an important role in the efficient processing of queries in recursive first-order databases. The authors analyze the necessity of expert knowledge in recursive query processing and present a modularized relational planner, RELPLAN, for knowledge-directed inference and planning in expert database systems. The relational planner preserves the high-level query interface, behaves as a deductive front-end of a relational database system, and demonstrates the effectiveness of expert knowledge in compiling recursive queries.
