Abstract

The Snowband Dynamics Project (SNOWBAND) was initiated in December 1997 and 1998 to document and understand the kinematic and thermodynamic structures of heavy precipitation bands occurring in the northwest quadrant of occluded cyclones. SNOWBAND gathered ELDORA Doppler radar data and high-resolution dropsonde data for use in determining the relative roles of isentropic ascent, conditional symmetric instability and transverse ageostrophic circulations associated with frontogenesis in the production and maintenance of these bands.
