Abstract

The article focuses on the history of transportation archaeology in Illinois and the contributions of archaeologist John A. Walthall to the field. Several institutions in the state, including the Illinois State Museum and the Southern Illinois University, expanded their participation in state archaeology by the end of the 1940s. In 1994, the Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program (ITARP) was created through the efforts of Walthall and the transportation department.
