Abstract

What is applied philosophy of language? Your answer to this question will likely depend on how you conceive the difference between applied philosophy and “philosophy proper.” Over the past decade, philosophers of language have increasingly focused on topics that are categorized under the heading “social philosophy of language,” which includes propaganda and ideology, language and gender, and slurs. However, part of our motivation for compiling this handbook is to consider work that draws on more than social and political thought.
