Abstract

The definition of power electronics and key characteristics including high efficiency and reliability are presented. Methods of analysis including energy balance and switch matrix analysis are introduced. Energy balance examples are given for dc-dc power converters. The challenges of building and operating switching circuits are described, including implications of Kirchhoff's laws for switching power converter operation. Representations of idealized switching devices and classes of power semiconductor devices are presented. Switching functions and control alternatives that include duty ratio control, pulse-width modulation, and phase control are defined. Sample applications and trends in power supplies, transportation, computer power, and renewable energy are discussed.
