Abstract

Parallel grooves etched in silicon chips provide precise alignment for fibers joined within the connectorizing hardware of lightguide cables. The fibers are nested in a chip's grooves whose spacing corresponds to that of fibers in a cable ribbon, then secured by an inverted set of grooves of another chip. Controlled by precision photolithographic techniques, the etching of silicon of appropriate crystalline structure automatically stops where planes of the structure intersect, yielding grooves in the material that possess high dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
