N1 - Funding Information: Research reported in this Review was supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under award R01CA197516, R01 GM117594 and R01EB009745. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health. T.P.W. was supported by a Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana−Champaign. T.P.W. is now supported from the “Pancreatic cancer comprehensive histopathology based on IR chemical imaging” project, which is carried out within the Homing programme of the Foundation for Polish Science cofinanced by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund. Funding Information: Rohit Bhargava is Founder Professor of Engineering in the Department of Bioengineering and affiliate professor in Chemistry and the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research has included development of IR imaging theory, several instruments and techniques, analytical methods and several applications. He received a dual B.Tech. degree (Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science and Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University (in Macromolecular Science and Engineering). Subsequently, he was a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health and has been at Illinois since as Assistant Professor (2005-2011), Associate Professor (2011-2012) and Professor (2012-). Fundamental work in optical theory and numerical methods in his laboratory directly leads to new instrumentation and technologies. Instruments developed in his laboratory have been used to provide new means to characterize and define cancer using chemical imaging. He led the first large scale validation of spectroscopic imaging for cancer pathology and recent innovations of stainless staining and systems approach to prognostication are developing IR imaging for digital molecular pathology in cancer, brain and cardiovascular applications. Rohit’s research has been recognized recently by the Agilent Thought Leader Award (2016), Fellow of AIMBE and SAS (2015), Meggers Award (2014), Craver Award (2013) and FACSS Innovation Award (2012). In addition, Rohit’s work has led to new paradigms in team-based research and education as well. He founded the Cancer Center at Illinois, which is combining high quality technology and engineering with the field of oncology. Earlier in his career, Rohit was the first assistant professor hired into the new Bioengineering department at Illinois and played a key role in its establishment and development. Using real-world problems to inspire education and student development, among his recent educational innovations are the development of a challenge-inspired model for undergraduate education (Cancer Scholars Program) and National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded graduate training program focusing on the Tissue Microenvironment. His research and educational work is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NCI, NIMH, NIBIB), National Science Foundation, Department of Defense (Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity and Office of Naval Research), non-profit foundations and industry.
