Abstract

Corn damage estimates for individual red-winged blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus were derived using energetic and life history information and independently from a study of captive birds. Combining these estimates with a breeding season population census of red-winged blackbirds in the agricultural zone of Quebec provided very similar regional damage estimates. The energetics estimates of damage equalling 0.41% of total production was consistent with estimates derived from extensive damage sampling in 9 other regions.-from Authors
