Abstract
The index of refraction of AlAs-GaAs superlattices is studied both experimentally and theoretically and is compared to the index of the corresponding ternary alloy obtained by intermixing of the superlattice. It is found that the index of a superlattice can be 5% - 6% higher than the index of the alloy due to zone folding of the states around gamma .
