Incomplete acquisition as a feature of bilingual and L2 grammars

Abstract

This paper discusses the notion of incomplete acquisition in post-puberty second language learning and in simultaneous or sequential bilingualism in childhood. The following issues are discussed within the framework ofUniversal Grammar: (1) some features of second language acquisition (L1 transfer, fossilization, rogue grammars), (2) issues in early bilingual acquisition (independent linguistic development, bilingual balance, the weaker language), (3) incomplete acquisition and the role ofage, (4) similarities and differences between L2 acquisition and incomplete acquisition in the domains oftense/aspect interpretations, binding, subject and object expression, and unaccusativity, (5) implications for the nature of bilingual grammars.
