Abstract

This poster illustrates the companies involved in mining, processing, and manufacturing mineral products in Illinois. The maps show the locations of mineral resource extraction sites in 2015, including crushed stone, sand and gravel, industrial sand, clay, peat, tripoli and coal. Information about the listed aggregate operations has been gathered from Illinois Office of Mines and Minerals, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, while the coal data are maintained by the coal section at the Illinois State Geological Survey. Since the last mineral producer directory was published in 1999, company information has been updated, new locations have been added, and many closed locations have been eliminated. Most of the sand and gravel resources in Illinois are related to continental glaciers. Majority of the production is from the northeastern corner of the state, where both quantity and quality of the sand and gravel are better than any other places in the state. Crushed stone is mined where the limestone and dolomite bedrock is shallow. These mining locations will be useful for the aggregate and coal industry, landowners, and land-use planning agencies in the recovery and reclamation of these resources.
