Abstract
An icing encounter flight simulator has been developed by adding functionality to the Flight Gear flight simulator and by developing supporting codes. The simulator functions as a systems integrator by bringing together the various flight simulator components composed of a reconfigurable aircraft model, flight mechanics, aerodynamics, propulsion, controls, sensors, and smart icing system components consisting of an icing model, the ice-protection system, neural networks and a glass cockpit display. The simulator will be used to perform virtual flight tests on a Twin Otter aircraft to examine the effects of icing on aircraft operations under a variety of conditions and to study the reaction of pilots flying under these conditions.
