Hysteresis, Barkhausen noise, and disorder induced critical behavior

Abstract

Hysteresis and Barkhausen noise was studied using the zero temperature random field Ising model (RFIM). By adding disorder to the system, a second-order phase transition was found from hysteresis loops with macroscopic jumps or bursts to smoothly varying hysteresis loops. Numerical simulations revealed that the critical region is remarkably large.
