High-lift configuration of a slotted natural laminar flow airfoil

Abstract

The S414 is a slotted natural laminar flow airfoil developed with the goal of achieving low profile drag and a high Clmax. The objective of this study was to develop alternate riggings for the S414 aft element in order to increase Clmax. This goal was accomplished by the creation of several parametric positioning schemes for the airfoil aft element in MATLAB, which interfaced with the flow solver MSES to analyze the airfoil computationally. A parametric study of varying aft element positions resulted in four alternate riggings for the airfoil, corresponding to varying levels of gap, overhang, and aft element rotation. In addition, a plain flap was added to the aft element. An experimental evaluation of these high-lift riggings was performed at Re = 1.8 × 106, M = 0.18. All alternate riggings provided gains in Clmax, but the case with the smallest gap and overhang, and the largest aft element rotation resulted in the greatest ΔClmax.
