Abstract

In this provocation, we discuss the capacities and limitations of using commercially available smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home to support informal learning. Bridging theories in self-regulated learning (SRL) and metacognition, we discuss whether smart speakers can (1) help learners to learn on their own and (2) help learners to learn better. We evaluate the current applications of smart speakers on learning and suggest future directions to harness smart speakers as learning partners in informal learning.
