Abstract
With box-model simulations, the development of cloud droplet spectra was calculated using a coagulation kernel which was recently derived from direct numerical simulations. It was found that for typical atmospheric conditions, the turbulent coagulation kernel is several orders of magnitude larger than the commonly used sedimentation kernel for droplets smaller than 100 μm. Without turbulence, after a 30-min simulation only 7% of the total mass was observed in droplets with sizes over 100 μm, while with moderate-intensity turbulence this increased to 79%.
