Groundwater monitoring network design using coupled Monte Carlo simulation and optimization

Abstract

This paper presents a method for the design, under uncertainty, of a groundwater well network for compliance monitoring at a waste disposal site. A numerical model of contaminant transport is used in a Monte Carlo simulation with the results serving as input to an optimization model. The optimization determines the well locations that maximize the number of simulated plumes detected. A hypothetical example illustrates the method.
