Abstract

This chapter scrutinizes the connections between glocalization and tourism concepts and processes. First, we provide a general introduction of how glocalization fits within tourism experiences and we sketch the origins of glocalization. We then zoom in on glocalization as a concept, its applications to tourism, and its role in defining a sense of place and belonging of destination residents. Building on this, we discuss the role of glocalization strategies for tourism practitioners in terms of staff training, experience design, marketing, public relations, as well as networking and cooperation. Finally, we investigate the connections between glocalization and transformative tourism and look at how both concepts can be combined to develop tourism experiences that encourage all involved stakeholders to expand their worldviews, engage in meaningful interactions, and inspire cultural revival at the destinations.
