Abstract

There are approx equal to 5400 species of living mammals, divided into 29 orders and 153 families recognized currently. This book lists the wild mammals that inhabit Illinois, USA which include representatives from eight orders: Didelphimorphia (opossum), Soricomorpha (shrews and moles), Cingulata (armadillo), Chiroptera (bats), Lagomorpha (rabbits), Carnivora (carnivores), Rodentia (rodents) and Artiodactyla (deer). 60 species are described in this book, but other mammals are found in the state occasionally. The book provides two dichotomous keys, species accounts, taxonomy, measurements of each species, skull identification, species' tracks, and distribution maps. The appearance and anatomy, natural history, signs and status and distribution of each species are also discussed.
