Abstract

Two monolithic aluminas were tested in uniaxial cyclic tension in order to examine subcritical crack growth under cyclic fatigue conditions. The effects of grain size and R ratio were investigated. The influence of cyclic loading on some important toughening mechanisms (R-curve behavior) was analyzed. Examination by scanning and transmission electron microscopy was performed in order to identify the microstructural processes responsible for the damage in the materials.
