Abstract
Family routines can play a role in minimizing the burden of asthma management while simultaneously fostering good treatment adherence. Published literature focusing on family routines, family rituals, and the use of routines in managing chronic illnesses was reviewed. Family routines follow a developmental course, protect family members from stresses associated with chronic illness, and can be incorporated into the deliberate planning of disease management. We propose that family routine typologies can be used as a means of guiding intervention in promoting good asthma treatment adherence.
